The Redheaded Stepchild

Cyclists have always been society’s “Redheaded Stepchild;” unloved and abused throughout history. The above picture is titled, "The Unrestrained Demon of the Wheel,” published in “The Judge,” Sept. 23, 1893, reflects the attitude of the day.

Since the invention of the ordinary, or high-wheeler in the late 1800s, when horse drawn carriages were the transport of the day. It was the wealthy classes who owned carriages, and bicycles scared the horses.

It was not uncommon for a coach driver to lash out at a passing cyclist with his horsewhip, and pedestrians were not above putting a walking stick through a rider’s wheel.

Bicycles were expensive and initially cycling was a sport of the wealthy, but it was a young man’s pastime and even wealthy young men were viewed with disdain by the older generation.

Cycling was initially banned in places in England as being too dangerous. However, being a “rich man’s sport,” the ban was short lived. By 1880 there were 213 established cycling clubs in the UK. Remember, this was before the invention of the “Safety Bicycle” in 1885, and the pneumatic tire in 1888.

With the invention of the “safety” bicycle, and mass production that followed, it really changed the face of the sport, and people’s attitude to it. Cycling became affordable to the working classes and it quickly became both a pastime and a mode of transport of the masses.

In England the wealthy who lived on large country estates, suddenly found their space invaded on the weekends by the working classes on their bicycles as they ventured outside the cities for the first time to explore the countryside.

 Cycling was no longer a pastime for the wealthy, in fact to ride a bicycle was now a definite sign of being lower class.

The privileged upper classes looked for new ways to reclaim the highways again; of course, they found it in the form of the automobile.

However, the resentment towards cyclists, by the upper classes, was already established long before the automobile arrived.

The invention of the pneumatic tire meant there was an explosion in the sport of cycle racing. And nothing will disrupt a quiet Sunday drive to church by the local gentry, like a bike race. This led to a ban in England of mass start road racing in 1894; a ban that would last until the 1950s.

The result was road racing never developed in the UK as it did in the rest of Europe. In countries like France, Holland, Belgium, and Italy cyclists receive respect and toleration because of the popularity of cycle road racing in those countries. The general public on the continent of Europe has become used to seeing cyclists racing and training on the highways.

The only competitive events open to British cyclists were track racing, of course limited to those close to a track. A few mass start circuit races in private parks, and individual time trials, which would become the mainstay of British cycling competition.

It is interesting to note that in 1894, as road racing was banned in England as being too dangerous; the first motor race was held on public roads in France. This led to almost ten years of absolute carnage as racecars quickly developed to reach speeds of 100 mph (Without the brakes, steering and road surfaces to match these speeds.) and there was wholesale slaughter of both spectators and drivers.

The attitude of the wealthy was no doubt one of, what were the deaths of a few of the peasant class, as long as they could enjoy their sport? Much the same state of affairs existed in the United States; it was the privileged who initially drove cars. They set the rules of accepted behavior and attitudes, which still exist today.

Is this not still the attitude now? “What is the death or injury of a few, as long as I can drive as fast as I like, and in a manner that suits me?” Of course, no one intends for people to die, but behave in a certain way and the inevitable will happen. And if a cyclist or pedestrian gets hit, no real concern, just the question, “What were they doing on the road anyway?”

When Henry Ford made cars available to the masses, naturally they expected to drive to the same standards set by their wealthy predecessors. All road safety legislation since has been aimed at protecting the person inside the car, with little thought going into the protection of other road users, namely pedestrians and cyclists.

Those of us today exercising our rights by riding our bike on the public highways should not despair. However, we should be realistic and recognize that current attitudes of the general public have been formed over a 100 years, or more; change will continue, but slowly.

In the mean time we will remain the redheaded stepchild, and should expect the abuse to last a little longer.

Dave, Thanks for your entertaining and educational re-post. (Love the illustration...)

Here in the USA (otherwise known as "the colonies":-) there was a similar explosion in the popularity of cycling, but it, too, faded out in the 1920s-1930s with the advent of the automobile.

Here in California we lost many great rail transit systems in the 1930s as well, thinks to the greed of the auto makers, oil companies, and others who painted and disdained cyclists and transit users as "lower class."

The same anti-cyclist mindset persists to this day among auto-centric folks, including transportation planners, with disastrous results.

Interesting to note that the driving mentality is tolerant of deaths among drivers, too -- tens of thousands every year in the United States.

Love the illustration - Have you noted the bike is compact geometry!

I'm less convinced on the matter of class devide between cyclists and car drivers. Note that mass start cycling was banned in the UK but so was / is road racing for cars. Road racing for both cars and bikes was / is legal on the continent. Car road races tend now to be held on closed roads of course whereas in UK even that was not permitted until very recently (1980's IIRC)...

Thanks for repeating, well written and the illustration is wonderful. The "Demon" side may have been largely earned as the bikes then did not have effective brakes (if at all) and riders were still learning the craft.

Great line from the 1896 Gossip of the Cyclers: "The revolution is coming, and the sooner the better". Absolutely.

Dave. I raced massed starts in the parks around Brum in the early 50s ALSO raced a lot of massed starts at Ansty and Church Lawford Royal Air Farce bases in Warks, Maybe the NCU where to paranoid about races on the open roads, the BLRC seemed to take the bull by the horns so to speak. Great pity lots of talent wasted, Set Great Britian, in my mind, back many years, from been the Champs they should have been. We had many riders that could have competed in the TDF etc. John Crump

I was a serious amateur rider for six or eight years, before turning 18 and entering the Marines, and I always wondered at the attitude of drivers to bikes. I can well understand why a set of "lobster claw gloves" would at times, be extremely inconvenient. I grew up around the world, a navy brat, and lived nine years in Chicago. I was well prepared for the Corps, by my walking, riding the train, and bike riding experience, for the carnage of war.
The last set of bike wheels I laced were my first set of sewup rims, Mavic, 36 hole, on mafact hubs, I believe. Had to have them to get my Raleigh I think "sport", steel tube, bottom of the line at the time, and rusted when I got it, under 23 pounds.
I did quite a few thousand miles in Illinois, beautiful riding country, nice terrain for a young one like me, at the time. Met some really great people, the kind you hope to meet as a "biker", but seldom do.
I've always loved the road races, until the steroid issue arrived, and now, we are scarred deeply, for "the drive, at any cost, to win.
I'm building my first bike since I was 18, (bicycle, that is), I've got a bit crazy, (at 61, I can afford anything on ebay), but I think I'm going to have a very nice Tange No.1 framed bike, a bit short, but the best I've ever had, I've found great wheels, a pair of Bontrager tires, on slightly used rims, 28 spokes, Campi hubs, with a nine ring cassette on the rear, for an hundred, with shipping, new, still rubber bits hanging, never ridden. So much has changed, I've got extra deraileurs, hubs, and ran across a trek frame with a broken rear dropout, for 4 dollars, it's about a 51 or 2 cm frame, a bit short for me, but hopefully I can get a buddy to buy it and let me help him round up the parts.
I ran marathons, and was working toward my first triathalon, when I was medicaled out of the Corps, for multiple sclerosis, and I've finally decided its my time, I can skip work, and ride the M.S. bike ride this year, and get back to what I used to love so much.
I live down in North Carolina, now, out 20 miles from Greenville, and New Bern, four miles from Vanceboro, town of almost a thousand, and lots of fields of crops to ride on, learn all the different roads, not on the maps.
I was scraping for information, given all the changes, from 126, to 130 mm, on rear axles, cassettes instead of freewheels, the 700c tires, I rode 27 inch, I think they were just at an inch wide, "narrow tires" before finally putting sewups on, but these are almost as light. Forty years of technology, and the best frames are still steel. There's more than half a pound difference between the Trek frame and the Tange, it's 3 lbs, 5 ounces, halfway through the surface rust, the trek in four and a half, also Tange tube, definitely No. 2 or so, I can't believe I stumbled back in, just at the right time! This is a great blog, love the full and complete explication of Dave's moving from lugged frames, to "filletted brazing", I always considered that, as a boy, couldn't afford the torches, too many wrenches to buy.
Got here from "the curmudgeon's site, another great site of knowledge and history, perhaps the best, general collection of change.
Still a great time to be alive, hope to get much out of this.
